You're paying US duty on every order. Your customer isn't.

Since 24 July 2026, Australian stores pay US import duty before the parcel leaves, worked out item by item, plus a handling fee. Unless your checkout charges for it, it comes straight out of your margin.

What changed

What it's costing you

Duty per order-
Handling fee (10% of duty)-
Admin fee-
Total per US order-
Out of your margin each month

An estimate to show the size of the problem, not a customs quote. Real duty depends on each item's code, origin and declared value.

Charge it at checkout instead

On WooCommerce, add the duty as its own line at checkout for US orders, with a short note that explains it. Your US customers see the real cost before they pay, and your Australian customers pay nothing extra.

Add a "US import duty" fee for the United States as a percentage of the order, only for the shipping methods and order values you choose, with a "what is this?" note beside it.

A$79 per site, per year

For a mixed range: scope each fee to named products or whole categories, so duty lands only on what attracts it. Schedule a rate change before it starts, and see what each region actually collected.

Questions

Won't a duty line at checkout put US customers off?

A clear line at checkout, with a note saying what it's for, tells the customer the real cost before they pay, so nothing surprises them later. The alternative is paying it yourself on every order.

Why not just raise US prices?

You can, but a flat price rise overcharges the items that attract little or no duty and undercharges the ones that attract a lot. A fee worked out from the order is closer to what you actually pay. Pro gets closest, because it charges only the products and categories that are dutiable.

Does the free plugin work on its own?

Yes. Most stores with a simple range only need the free plugin: one percentage for the United States. Pro is for ranges where different products attract different rates.
